SWEET COAL: a Spanish Christmas Tradition

The Three Wise Men bring Christmas presents to Spanish children every 6th of December. They are also known as the Magi. They were a group of distinguished foreigners who went to visit Jesus after his birth, bearing gifts of gold, myrrh and incense. They are regular figures in traditional accounts of the nativity and in celebrations of Spanish Christmas.

The Magi made fun of the bad kids leaving something that could be found in the chimney of their house instead of a present: coal. Over the years, it was replaced by “sweet coal” that has the look of natural charcoal. Nowadays, sweet coal is given to children who have behaved well, as a reminder or warning of what could happen if during the next year do not behave as they should.
